I think a requirement of the very best songs (and I think there are very many of these) is at some point during the song you catch yourself saying “Good Lord in heaven this is the greatest bit of recorded sound ever.”

I never hear common people by pulp without thinking that at least once, maybe twice. If you shook me in the middle of the night and said “what’s the best recorded song?” etc i might not remember to say ‘common people’ or any of the other 75 songs that fall into this category. But at certain levels of very great art, you have to lean on the William Blake saying about there being “no competition between the poets in heaven"
